Diploma to Bachelor Degree Australia: How Much Credit Do You Actually Get? (2026 Guide)
Already completed a diploma in Australia and want to upgrade to a bachelor’s degree? Many international students can receive up to one year of credit and finish their degree faster than expected.
This guide explains how the diploma-to-degree pathway works in Australia, how much credit universities typically grant, which pathways give the best outcomes, and what documents you need before you apply.
What “Upgrading” a Diploma Actually Means
Upgrading your diploma to a bachelor’s degree is not starting over. It is an application process where your new university assesses how much of your diploma overlaps with their degree curriculum, and gives you credit (also called advanced standing or RPL) for it.
That credit removes units from your degree. Fewer units means fewer semesters, fewer tuition payments, and earlier graduation.
This is entirely different from what the pillar page on university transfers covers. A diploma upgrade is not a mid-degree transfer, it is a fresh enrolment into a bachelor’s program, with your diploma used as the basis for fast-tracking.

The National Policy Most Students Never Hear About
Here is something that surprises most students: there is a national credit transfer agreement that covers the majority of Australian universities.
Universities Australia has developed national credit transfer guidelines for students moving from VET (Vocational Education and Training) to a related undergraduate university course. Participating universities have agreed that holders of a completed diploma in a related area of study will be granted up to 33% credit in a three-year degree, or up to 25% in a four-year degree. Holders of an advanced diploma can obtain up to 50% credit towards a three-year degree.
In plain terms:
| Your Qualification | 3-Year Degree Credit | 4-Year Degree Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Diploma (related field) | Up to 33% = ~1 year | Up to 25% = ~1 year |
| Advanced Diploma (related) | Up to 50% = ~1.5 years | Up to 33% = ~1 year |
This is the floor, not the ceiling. Individual universities can and do offer more.
What Each Major University Actually Offers
Deakin University (Melbourne)
Deakin recognises your achievements and offers guaranteed recognition of prior learning (RPL) for eligible TAFE qualifications, as well as Deakin’s associate degrees and Deakin College qualifications. Guaranteed RPL saves you study time and money, getting you closer to your dream course faster.
Deakin’s RPL policy considers all university, TAFE and private tertiary education provider qualifications. For most courses, Deakin policy requires that at least one third of the course needs to be completed at Deakin in the current course.
This means at Deakin, the maximum credit you can receive is roughly two-thirds of a degree, meaning if you have a strong advanced diploma, you could complete a bachelor’s degree in as little as 1 year at Deakin.
RMIT University (Melbourne)
As a dual-sector university, RMIT’s certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas provide the skills and knowledge to seamlessly pathway into a degree.
At RMIT, credit for prior experience (also called recognition of prior learning) may be awarded for skills or knowledge gained during previous study. The maximum amount of credit you can get depends on whether you’re enrolled in a vocational, undergraduate or postgraduate program. You can only receive credit for study or experience that is closely related to your RMIT program.
Flinders University (Adelaide/Online)
Credit may be given to a maximum of 54 units (towards a 3-year degree) for holders of a completed TAFE diploma, associate diploma, advanced diploma, degree or equivalent. For example, a student who has completed the Diploma of Nursing (Pre-enrolment) at TAFE/VET may receive up to 36 units of credit, equivalent to 1 year of full-time study, towards the Bachelor of Nursing.
The 5 Pathways with the Highest Credit Outcomes
Based on verified university data, these are the diploma-to-degree combinations where Pakistani students consistently receive the most credit:
1. Diploma of Business → Bachelor of Business
This is the highest-volume pathway. Most universities in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth grant 8 units (1 full year) of credit. At some universities the overlap is even higher — 10 to 12 units — if the diploma included accounting, marketing, and management subjects.
Best universities for this pathway: Deakin (Melbourne), Western Sydney University, Griffith (Brisbane), ECU (Perth)
2. Diploma of IT → Bachelor of Information Technology
IT diplomas have strong unit overlap with bachelor programs. Credit outcomes range from 8 to 12 units depending on how technical the diploma was. If your diploma included networking, programming, and database subjects, expect close to 12 units.
Best universities for this pathway: RMIT (Melbourne), UTS (Sydney), QUT (Brisbane)
3. Diploma of Nursing → Bachelor of Nursing
A student who has completed the Diploma of Nursing (Pre-enrolment) at TAFE/VET may receive up to 36 units of credit, equivalent to 1 year of full-time study, towards the Bachelor of Nursing.
Nursing is one of the most structured pathways in Australia. Credit is well-defined and consistent across universities.
Best universities for this pathway: Flinders University, Deakin, ACU (Melbourne/Sydney/Brisbane)
4. Diploma of Accounting → Bachelor of Accounting
Accounting diplomas map closely to first-year and some second-year bachelor subjects. Expect 8 units at most universities. CPA accreditation requirements limit how much can be credited at the upper levels.
Best universities for this pathway: Deakin, La Trobe (Melbourne), Griffith (Brisbane)
5. Diploma of Early Childhood Education → Bachelor of Education
Education pathways are well supported across Australia. 6 to 8 units of credit is typical. Some universities have formal articulation agreements with specific TAFE providers that guarantee credit amounts upfront.
The Difference Between “Related” and “Unrelated” Diplomas
This is where most students lose credit, and where Flybridge’s assessment saves real money.
Universities assess credit based on content overlap, not just category. A Diploma of Business and a Bachelor of Business sounds like a clear match, but if your diploma was heavily focused on hospitality management and your target degree is accounting-focused, the credit can drop from 8 units to 2 or 3.
The key documents that determine credit outcome are your subject outlines, the detailed unit descriptions from your diploma. Universities compare these line by line against their bachelor’s curriculum.
This is why submitting subject outlines is non-negotiable. Without them, universities cannot properly assess credit, and many will default to minimal credit out of caution.
TAFE Diploma vs Private College Diploma — Does It Matter?
Yes, it matters, but less than most students think.
Course credits may be given for higher education or vocational education and training (VET) studies that have already been completed. The education provider offering your new course will decide if your previous study or work experience can be recognised.
Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, and Certificates are awarded credit if the course aligns with AQF standards. This applies to students moving from VET to university (e.g., TAFE to Bachelor). Each university applies its own rules to what qualifies.
The important factor is whether your diploma is from a TEQSA- or ASQA-registered provider and whether it sits within the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Most TAFEs and registered private colleges meet this standard. If your diploma was from an offshore institution, credit assessment becomes more complex and outcomes are less predictable.
Intake Dates — When Can You Start?
Most Australian universities run two main intakes per year:
| Intake | Start Month | Application Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | February 2027 | October–November 2026 |
| Semester 2 | July 2026 | April–May 2026 |
Some universities, including Deakin and RMIT, also offer a trimester system with a third intake in October/November. This is worth checking if you want to start sooner than the standard semester dates.
Key point: Credit assessment takes time. If you want to start in Semester 2 (July 2026), your application, including subject outlines, should be submitted by late April 2026 at the latest.
3 Mistakes That Cost Students Credit and Money
Mistake 1: Not Submitting Subject Outlines
This single omission is the most common and most costly mistake. Without subject outlines, universities cannot assess credit properly and routinely grant far less than a student is entitled to. Subject outlines are the unit-by-unit course descriptions from your diploma, your TAFE or college can provide official copies.
Mistake 2: Choosing a University Based Only on Fees
Two universities can charge similar tuition but offer very different credit amounts. A university that grants you 10 units of credit instead of 6 effectively saves you one extra semester, worth AUD 8,000 to AUD 15,000 in tuition alone, before living costs. Always compare credit outcomes alongside fees.
Mistake 3: Applying to a Non-Related Degree
If there is limited overlap between your diploma content and the target degree, credit drops significantly and you may end up completing close to a full three-year program. A Diploma of Community Services and a Bachelor of Business, for example, have very little overlap. Choosing the right degree for your diploma background is the first decision, and the most important one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my diploma have to be from a TAFE for credit to apply?
No. Credit applies to any diploma from a registered Australian provider, TAFE, private college, or approved higher education provider, as long as the qualification sits within the AQF and the content aligns with the bachelor’s program.
Can I get credit for a diploma I completed years ago?
Yes, though some universities apply a recency requirement, typically 5 to 10 years. If your diploma was completed more than 7 years ago, it is worth confirming with the target university before applying.
What if my diploma was in a slightly different specialisation?
The credit assessment is done unit by unit, not at diploma level. Even if the diploma title is different from the degree, individual units may still match and earn credit. Always apply and let the university assess, do not assume you are ineligible.
How long does a credit assessment take?
Most universities take 2 to 6 weeks to process a credit application after submission. This is separate from the course admission process, which can run in parallel.
Will I need to sit an interview or competency test?
For most standard pathways (business, IT, accounting), no. For regulated professions like nursing or teaching, some universities require a skills demonstration or professional suitability assessment before credit is confirmed.
Can Flybridge tell me how much credit I will get before I apply?
Yes. Flybridge reviews your diploma transcript and subject outlines, compares them against the curriculum of your target universities, and gives you an estimated credit outcome before you submit any formal application. This typically takes 24 hours.
